Deathstalker is an epic space-opera, a cross between Star Wars and Frank Herbert's Dune. It depicts a human Empire presided over by the beautiful and sadistic tyrant, her Imperial Majesty Lionstone XIV, who tolerates but does not acquiesce to the nominal, vaguely parliamentary government and the fearful aristocracy whose taxes support her rule. It is a universe of fantastic technology wielded by a stratified society that is largely barbaric in nature. The Empire is battling incursions on its territory by several alien species, as well as rebellion from within. The rebellion forces are composed largely of the outcasts of society, the psychokinetic espers, clones and various losers in the war between noble families. This a universe where interstellar travel, incredible genetic manipulation, and energy handweapons are possible, but due to the minutes of recharging necessary between firings, swordsmanship is a necessary and cherished component of survival. The populace is entertained by mortal combat in the Arena, which shames the Roman Coliseum in terms of savagery. Deathstalker is loaded with action of all kinds: spectacular space battles, duels between master swordsman, within-a-hairsbreadth rescues, and political intrigue.
