What is a Download? A download is a digital file transferred from one computer to another. In this sites case, it refers to an audio file, which is transferred, or downloaded, from our server to your computer. How do the download files work? To download an audio file, click the right button of your mouse on the 'Download' option. In the gray menu which pops-up, select "Save File As…" The default location for saving the file may be within several subfolders, therefore try to save it in an obvious place. We recommend placing the files on your Desktop, then transferring them to a place when the files are completed. Once the download is complete, you will be given the option to open the file. This will require that your computer has the Windows Media 11 player. If you do not have the player, go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx and download the player. If your computer does have the Windows Media 11 player, it will begin the Digital Rights Management (DRM) section of the download. In simple terms, the audio file you have just downloaded is locked, and you must now purchase the key. To learn more about DRM click here Are these MP3s? These files are not MP3 files, but Windows Media Audio, or WMA, files. They are similar to MP3 files in that both use file compression to reproduce audio into smaller computer files. MP3s are about one-tenth the size of a regular CD file, and WMA files are about one half the size of an MP3 file. WMA also allows authors and publishers to protect their work from being copied and traded on the Internet without their permission. This is done with Digital Rights Management, or DRM. To learn more about DRM, click here. How do I get the Windows Media Player? The Windows Media Player can be downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx. These audio files only work with Version 9 or above of Windows Media, and therefore, you might need to download the new player if the audio does not work. To find out which version of the Windows Media Player you have on your computer, open up the player, select 'Help', and then 'About'. What is DRM? DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. It is the process of encrypting an audio file so that only the player with the correct key can play it. When a DRM protected file is played on a computer, it first checks the player serial number and the computer information in order to ensure that it is the right computer. While the file itself can be copied, saved, or sent across the Internet, only the person who purchased it can actually listen to it on their computer. Why won't my audio play? Either you have not completed the Digital Rights Management portion, or you do not have Windows Media 11. If neither of these are the case, please email information@cuttingcorp.com or visit our CONTACT US page. Can I share this audio with a friend? The audio is locked to your computer. Feel free to play it for as many people as you like from the computer or WMA compatable portable device (to learn more about devices compatable with our DRM and WMA compression Click Here). However, you can not play it from any other Can I Download these files to my portable player? Yes, you can. The DRM on Defiance audio downloads allows the user to place content onto a portable device or a CD. There are a growing number of players that now support the "wma" format with the DRM. A complete list of players that support Windows Media DRM can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx . We also have a list of players located here: Compatable players. If you have a compatible player you can use the "Portable Devices" Section of Windows Media Player 9 to exchange content with your device. You can also use the software that was provided with your device. Why are there so many files for one book? We have divided each book into several sections to enhance the downloading experience. Each section is between 15 and 30 minutes of audio and roughly 5mb's in size. Since the majority of our customers use a 56k or dial- up modem to access these files we have divided each book into smaller files, thus smaller file sizes to download. Instead of waiting over an hour to hear a downloaded file now the user only has to wait a few minutes before they can begin listening. If you have a faster connection and would like the whole audio file you can download that as well. We have also divided up the titles into smaller sections to ensure that the content will be able to be placed on portable devices that have limited storage space The full version of some of our titles can exceed the amount of storage space on some older players. What are the differences between the "Full" and "Divided" versions of the audio books? We provide the content of our audio downloads in two versions, a "Full" version and a "Divided" version. With the "Full" version, you can download the entire audio book as one audio file. The entire content of the audio book will be in one large audio file. The "full" versions are between 40 and 50 megabytes in size. Each audio book is roughly three hours in length. The "Divided" versions of the audio books are sections of the Full version. Each section of audio is between 15 and 30 minutes of audio and roughly 5 megabytes in size. We have split our titles up into several sections to allow users the ability to place the content onto their portable players regardless of the size limitations of their players. With smaller files to download, the amount of time that is required to download a file will be drastically reduced as well. Do I have to pay for each file of the book? You will only be required to pay once for each audio book. Once you have purchased the licscense for a title you will be able to download and playback ANY file from that title. You are also allowed to download any of the sections within a title as many times as you would like. You may also download the "Full" version as well as any of the divided sections with only one purchased license. What if my file gets erased after I have paid for it? If you have accidentally erased one of the files that you have downloaded and purchased you can still re-download any file from the title that you have purchased. We allow users to download any title that they have purchased as many times as desired to ensure that the customer can re-obtain any of their purchased files. Can I re-download the audio files? Yes. Once you have purchased the license for a title you may download any of the audio files for that title as many times as desired. You may also download the divided version as well as the full version if you please. Any file under a title that you have purchased may be downloaded as many times as you like. How long does my license last? Each license is based on your computer ID. Your license does not expire. If have purchased a license and need to be issued a new one (IE. you have bought a new computer, you have erased you hard drive, etc.), contact us and we can issue you a new one. Can I place my downloaded file onto a CD? Yes, you can. You can place the files on a CD 2 times. If you would like to copy the entire audio for a book it will require several CD’s. If you are using Windows Media Player 9 on your computer you can use the "Copy to CD or device" section of the player.
